AstraZeneca Admits Covishield Can Cause Rare Side Effects Amid Lawsuit

According to a report by The Telegraph (UK), British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has acknowledged that its Covid vaccine, Covishield, can lead to rare side effects. Court documents reveal that Covishield, produced by the Serum Institute of India in collaboration with AstraZeneca and Oxford University, may cause a condition resulting in blood clots and low platelet count in rare instances.

AstraZeneca is currently facing a class action lawsuit in the UK, where plaintiffs in 51 cases are seeking damages of up to 100 million pounds over alleged deaths and severe injuries caused by the vaccine. Despite the legal action, the UK government, which has indemnified AstraZeneca from such lawsuits, has yet to intervene in the matter.

The first complainant in the case, Jamie Scott, claims to have suffered a permanent brain injury after receiving the Covishield vaccine in April 2021, leading to blood clot-related complications. AstraZeneca, while contesting the claims, has admitted in court documents that Covishield can, in very rare cases, cause Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS), characterized by blood clots and low platelet count.

The admission marks a significant reversal from AstraZeneca's previous stance, wherein it denied any causal link between the vaccine and TTS. The company now faces the possibility of compensating victims and their families for vaccine-related injuries.

Despite these developments, AstraZeneca maintains that the vaccine is not defective and its efficacy has not been overstated. However, the company's position contradicts scientific findings linking Covishield to vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT), a subset of TTS.
