India Investigates Spice Makers Following Alleged Contamination in MDH and Everest Masala

India Investigates MDH and Everest Spice Makers for Alleged Contamination

India has initiated inspections of facilities belonging to spice makers MDH and Everest following allegations of contamination in some of their products. This action comes after sales of certain items were halted in Hong Kong and Singapore due to suspected high levels of a cancer-causing pesticide.

The spices export regulator in India has requested data on MDH and Everest exports from relevant authorities in both Hong Kong and Singapore. Additionally, they are collaborating with the companies to identify the root cause of the issue and propose corrective measures if necessary. MDH and Everest have yet to respond to inquiries regarding the Spices Board's statement.

Hong Kong recently suspended sales of three MDH spice blends and an Everest spice mix for fish curries. Similarly, Singapore has ordered a recall of the Everest spice mix and advised against its consumption.

MDH and Everest are renowned for their products in India and are exported to various countries in Europe, Asia, and North America.

To address the situation, the Spices Board has initiated mandatory testing for ethylene oxide, the pesticide in question, in spice consignments bound for Singapore and Hong Kong. Furthermore, shipments to other countries will undergo strict monitoring for the contaminant.
