Choose a Private Equity Fund and build a short tear down
1. What they invest in ?
2. How they raise capital
3. Performance (IRR, MOIC if available)
4. Recent Deals
I use to do it for my previous company and they have lot of database for this so make sure you genuinely put good data they will catch the mistakes, the source should be good and reliable.
What does this shows ?
That you understand the investor perceptive.
Case 2 : Comparable Fund Deck
Build you own mock private equity pitch deck using public company or data available by companies like S&P Global and others.
Highlight a strategy, target returns and fundraising narrative.
What does this shows ?
This proves you understand how firms market to investors
Case 3 : Deal Sourcing Map
Pick a niche (E.g. Renewable Energy, Health Care or Infrastructure)
and build a list of 20+ potential acquisition targets.
Include : Revenue range, recent funding, leadership, location, growth rate.
When I was in my organisation and even when I'm freelancing these data sources are sold in the market by many organisation and this helps a lot in multiple deals this is one of the biggest work of the century for Investment Banking.
This shows that you understand deal flow and sourcing.
Case 4 : Investor Memo
Pick a company and write a 1 page investor memo.
Include : Business model, risk, exit, potential and valuation.

All this will create a proof of work and this is much more stronger than having a experience at a small firm.
