Bombay Shaving Company's Attempt to Support UP Board Topper Prachi Nigam Faces Backlash for Insensitive Ad: 'Bulls**t'
After UP Board Class 10th topper Prachi Nigam faced widespread trolling for her facial hair, Bombay Shaving Company decided to show support by placing an ad in her honor on the front page of a newspaper. The ad read, "Dear Prachi, They are trolling your hair today, they'll applaud your A.I.R tomorrow." However, it was the last line of the ad, "We hope you never get bullied into using our razor," that sparked criticism on social media. Some users questioned whether Nigam had given her consent for the company to use her name in the ad.
Shantanu Deshpande, the Founder CEO of Bombay Shaving Company, defended the ad on LinkedIn, stating that he was shocked by the amount of hate directed at a teenage girl who had excelled in her exams. He described the ad as a simple message of support to Nigam, emphasizing that it was not intended as an opportunistic sales tactic.
Despite Deshpande's explanation, the ad faced significant backlash on social media. Users criticized the company for what they perceived as a tone-deaf and opportunistic advertisement, with some questioning the founder's judgment. Others labeled the ad as laughable and questioned its relevance to the company's target audience.
However, amidst the criticism, there were also voices of praise for the company's gesture of support towards Nigam. Some users commended Deshpande and his team for standing up for the young girl in the face of online bullying.
As of now, Prachi Nigam has not responded directly to the advertisement. However, she has previously addressed the trolling she faced, expressing her happiness that her success is now her identity. Nigam emphasized that her family, teachers, and friends have always supported her, and she remains unaffected by the negative comments about her appearance.
Prachi Nigam achieved an impressive 98.5 percent marks in the UP Board Class 10th exams.
